Sergei Babayan, piano

"Babayan is no mere pianist. He is a master-musician for whom the piano is his voice, his orchestra."

— THE SCOTSMAN

Hailed for his emotional intensity, energy and remarkable levels of colour, the great piano masterSergei Babayan brings a deep understanding and insight to his playing. Born in Armenia into a musical family, Babayan began his studies there with Georgy Saradjev and continued at the Moscow Conservatory with Mikhail Pletnev, Vera Gornostayeva and Lev Naumov. Babayan took his first trip outside of the former USSR in 1989, and he went on to win consecutive first prizes in several major international competitions.

Babayan has performed with many major orchestras including the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre Nationale de Lille and The Cleveland Orchestra. He is also on faculty at the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Juilliard School. For this performance, Babayan will share an entire program of the great composer Johann Sebastian Bach, including the monumental piano work: The Well Tempered Klavier Book One.
