This concert features mezzo-soprano Marion Newman in two compelling works.Bramwell Tovey’s Fugitive Voices honours the lives of escaped slaves who fled via the Underground Railroad to safety in Canada, and also recognizes the significance of Owen Sound, Ontario, the northern terminal of the Underground Railroad. Anna Höstman’s Nuyamł-ił Kulhulmx – Singing the Earth – describes the beauty and spirit of British Columbia’s Bella Coola Valley in a multilingual and cross-disciplinary setting. Höstman, who group up in Bella Coola, created Singing the Earth with Sto:lo installation artist and dramaturge Dylan Robinson, musicologist Patrick Nickelsen, the Continuum Ensemble, and Marion Newman, who was born in Bella Coola and is of Kwagiulth/Sto:lo heritage. Music, text, video, audio interviews of other Bella Coola residents, photography, and erasure poetry are all incorporated into this hour-long work.
