KATHERINE CHI, PIANO; VSO/ BRAMWELL TOVEY

Calgary-native Katherine Chi became the first woman and the first Canadian to be named Honens Prize Laureate in 2000.  She has become one of Canada’s foremost musical interpreters, performing throughout Europe and North America to great acclaim. “Ms Chi displayed a keen musical intelligence and a powerful arsenal of technique” wrote The New York Times of her debut concert.  She is performing Prokofiev’s Third Piano Concerto, which the Globe and Mail’s has previously praised as “the most unfailingly cogent and compelling Prokofiev’s Third in years.”  Maestro Tovey also takes on a big and transcending work: Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4 “Romantic” -- as he now expands his horizons from Mahler to Bruckner.  The symphony is a rare combination of power, majesty and beauty and is the composer’s most popular and accessible work.
