VSO PACIFIC RIM CELEBRATION
These two concerts are coincident with the Chinese New Year and will be gala events, especially for the Asian communities in Vancouver. The first night mixes Chinese and Western composers, featuring celebrated cellist Jian Wang and two young protégés: violinist Wen Wei, playing the Butterfly Concerto, and 9 year old Serena Wang, playing Beethoven. The conductor is the celebrated Long Yu. The second night has a Korean focus, featuring much-loved icon Sarah Chang, playing the Bruch violin concerto, and a variety of Korean compositions, including UBC-graduate Grace Lee’s work for kayagum (Korean zither) and orchestra. Soprano Young Mi Kim and the Zion Mission Choir will also appear. There are simply so many stunning artists here that must be seen.
